Lindsay Smith: Listen
Purple
(Lindsay Smith)
PURPLE
I’m washing off my purple lips
(Who is under there?)
Purple bruises dot my hips
(I wonder if she cares.)
I still feel him on my skin
(Who is under there?)
I know that I’ll see him again
(I wonder if she cares.)
All my life, she has been hiding here,
And I must try to put to rest her many fears,
And I don’t know how I grow while she stays small,
And I don’t know who she is or why she’s here at all.
Someone’s looking in my eyes
(Who is under there?)
She’s naked under my disguise
(And I wonder if she cares.)
I can’t hold still or he will see
Who is under there.
I hate the way she uses me
And doesn’t even care.
I’d like to let him see me, but I am just a blur.
I’m nothing but a rusty shield designed to cover her.
I do it all for her, for her!
All my life, she has been hiding here,
And I must try to put to rest her many fears,
And I don’t know how I grow while she stays small,
And I don’t know who she is or why she’s here,
Who she is or why she's here at all.
