The Cat & the Canary

(Lindsay Smith)

THE CAT & THE CANARY

When you tell me I am beautiful, I feel like the cat who ate you up,
And I know I don’t deserve you, but then, who does?
So I'll tell you that you’re gorgeous until it makes you blush,
Until you have to kiss me just to make me shut up.

My mind is such a mess that I just can’t let you in.
It’s a place you wouldn’t want to visit, let alone live,
But I will save you the trouble of asking what I’m laughing at.
I laugh because I’m such a full, contented cat.

And when you lie before me in all your naked glory,
How can I keep from eating you up?
And when you lie before me and say that you adore me,
How can I keep from eating you, eating you up?

You know, you really are to good for me; you put up with too much.
In return, you get so little besides my love,
So I’ll just open my mouth and close my eyes.
Will you fly away, or will you jump inside?

And when you lie before me in all your naked glory,
How can I keep from eating you up?
And when you lie before me and say that you adore me,
How can I keep from eating you up?

And when you lie before me and say that you adore me,
How can I keep from eating you up?
And when you lie before me in all your naked glory,
How can I keep from eating you, eating you up?
